Japanese boffins have developed a working bendable picture sensor!


NHK Science & Expertise Analysis Laboratories – a division of the Japanese Broadcasting Company – has developed an ultra-thin, bendable picture sensor. Measuring simply 0.01mm thick, the 320 x 240-pixel sensor is the world’s first bendable silicon picture sensor. This is not the primary time we have heard about curved picture sensors – Sony was submitting patents for curved sensor tech in 2021 – nonetheless this was removed from a working prototype.

However why even hassle to make a bendable sensor when present flat sensors already do a terrific job of capturing digital photos?
